Bill Maher eviscerated a millennial reporter for the Washington Post and the paper itself for punishing one of its top reporters for a joke, and Bill says it’s more than just a human resources issue — it’s is a threat to democracy.
As he said, Felicia Sonmez – which he describes as “a lot” – was enraged by a fellow journalist David Weigelwho retweeted a joke… “All the girls are bi. You just have to know if it’s polar or sexual.”
Well, it sent Felicia into orbit, furious that someone would make such an offensive remark. As Bill says — IT’S A PLEASURE. Men always joke about women and VICE VERSA.
But, the ‘Real Time’ host says Sonmez went to war, and the Washington Post quickly waved the white flag and suspended Weigel for a month without pay, saying retweeting the joke was a flagrant violation of his values - Bill says one of those was clearly NOT the First Amendment.
One of Weigel’s colleagues dared to tell everyone to calm down – that it was just a joke – and Sonmez then sued him, demanding that he be punished.
There’s been such a storm about it, Bill called the Post’s newsroom an ‘unlicensed daycare center’
Bill is convinced…Sonmez is emblematic of a generation made up of “emotional hemophiliacs” who feel an overwhelming sense of entitlement and have the attention span of a gnat.
And, he hilariously if not seriously suggested on the 50th anniversary of Watergate…if someone called the Post and said they were “Deep Throat” and wanted to meet in a parking lot to give a reporter information about the burglary, the young reporters refused to go and instead called HR and said it put them in danger!
Eventually, Sonmez herself was fired for insubordination and disrespecting her colleagues — FYI, her tweets continued and lambasted the newspaper itself — but Bill says the whole episode is super embarrassing for a media organization that fundamentally changed and inspired investigative journalism.
It is definitely worth listening to.
