Amir Khan provides a shot-for-shot of the terrifying moment thieves stuck guns in his face and stole his luxury watch – while his wife watched a few meters away – telling TMZ Sports “This is the first time I’ve had a gun pointed literally at my face.”
We spoke to the 35-year-old former boxing champ a day after his night out on the town with his wife Faryal Makhdoom almost became mortal…and interviewed the former boxing champ about the life-changing experience.
“In the UK, I mean the law is quite strict where almost no one, even the police, really carries arms,” Amir explained, exasperated.
“So it was quite shocking to see a gun pointed at me. And you could see they were young. They seemed a little nervous, and he kept saying to me, ‘Take off your watch’.”
We asked Amir, who had just finished eating at a restaurant about 45 minutes from London, if he thought the lick was somehow an inside job.
“Yeah, definitely. Obviously I was in a restaurant taking pictures with a lot of people. I never said no for a picture every time someone wanted to come for a picture,” he said. Khan said, explaining that someone might have spotted the wristwatch and knew it was worth a pretty penny.
“Someone must have recognized this watch. I was wearing a very expensive watch that’s worth maybe $100,000. I think this news must have traveled a bit. So I think somehow , it was set up. I just went to the wrong people, and they knew I had a watch there.”
We asked Khan – who has some of the most dangerous hands in the world – if he would consider launching a counter-ambush and attempting to disarm the robbers.
Amir says the thought crossed his mind.
“I’m a fighter. There was a time when I thought he had the gun and I could just move the gun aside and hit him. I know I would have hurt the guy.”
But, he felt that with two armed men and Faryal only a few meters away, the risk was too high.
“The only thing that stopped me was having my wife not far from me, behind me. Even if he fired the gun and even if he didn’t hit me, he could have touch someone else.”
After the robbery, Amir, predictably, called the cops… who immediately launched an investigation. We asked him if the police had any leads or suspects.
“The last time I spoke to them was obviously after the interview I had and they said they saw where the car was going, and they have the car in that radius – they have the cameras around this car.”
So far, Khan has not heard of any arrests.
Perhaps the saddest part of the story… Amir, who grew up in Manchester, says he no longer feels safe in one of the world’s most popular cities.
“I don’t feel safe. I’m in the city of London which is obviously a very well known city and everyone loves London. Now after being robbed you start hearing all the stories or you start reading about every theft. it happened. I mean, it happens pretty regularly,” Khan says.
“I need the Prime Minister, the MP MP and also the Mayor of London – what are these people doing?! They need to improve security and maybe get more police out or do something about it because it’s not a safe place to live.”
